Watchet area Dementia Action Alliance
Dementia Action Alliance brings together leading organisations across England committed to transforming health and social care outcomes for people affected by dementia.
Watchet Cabs are proud to have become a member of the Dementia Action Alliance and our drivers will undertake training on a regular basis.
We are the first and at present only cab service in Somerset to aim to become Dementia Friendly and are working closely with our local Dementia Alliance group.
We work closely with local care homes and our town, district and county councils to ensure the service we provide is second to none.
In an area with a significantly higher proportion of older residents than the national average, as well as being poorly served by public transport, many residents and visitors rely on taxis and private hire to access health care, to visit friends and relatives, to go shopping and for many other activities.
These needs are even more acute for those living with dementia and their carers; by understanding the nature of dementia better, Watchet Cabs drivers will be better able to provide a high quality service to all their clients - including those living with dementia and their carers.
Every person living with dementia, and every carer, has specific individual needs and concerns. It is therefore important to be able to assess these rapidly and empathetically and to respond accordingly, tailoring the service to the particular requirements of the client.
Watchet Cabs have written our own guide for taxi firms, the operators and the drivers.
It includes all the information required to fully operate as a Dementia Friendly Service and we can offer advice and support to taxi firms wishing to extend their level of service.
All drivers are encouraged to learn more about dementia by undertaking regular training, reading appropriate information, attending a dementia friends’ session and joining online and displaying the Dementia Friends window sticker in their vehicles.
We will continue to maintain high standards of customer care to all clients including those living with dementia and their carers and to be ready where possible to ‘go the extra mile’ (e.g. to accompany the client to the correct hospital reception desk rather than dropping them at the kerbside).
